The village of Kinchkha is located in Western Georgia, within the Khoni municipality, about 22 kilometers from the center of Khoni. In the heart of this area lies the spectacular Kinchkha waterfall, which cascades into several natural stone pools surrounded by beautiful canyons. Khoni itself has deep historical roots, featuring a Christian church built back in the 8th century.
As part of this journey, we visit Kutaisi, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. First mentioned in Greek historical sources in the 8th century BC as “Kutaia,” it served as the legendary capital of the Kingdom of Kolkheti — a place deeply connected to the famous myth of the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece. Located along both banks of the Rioni River, Kutaisi has been Georgia’s cultural and educational center for centuries.
Located just 12 kilometers from Kutaisi, the Gelati Monastery complex was founded in the 12th century by King David IV (David the Builder). Gelati is world-famous for its magnificent architecture, mosaics, and wall paintings. In 1106, the famous Gelati Academy was established here, serving as a top theological and scientific institution where geometry, arithmetic, music, philosophy, and astronomy were taught. Gelati was a royal property, and many of Georgia’s greatest kings are buried here.
Perched overlooking Kutaisi, Bagrati Cathedral was built by King Bagrat III in the 11th century. Archaeological excavations beneath the cathedral have discovered traces of an ancient 8th-century BC fortress and a 6th-century BC basilica. Bagrati stands as one of the finest examples of medieval Georgian architecture, famous for its distinct ornaments and historical frescoes.
On our return, a short excursion to Petra Castle is possible. Known in Georgian sources as Kajeti Castle, this ancient fortress is located near the Black Sea coast close to Batumi. From the 2nd to the 9th century, Petra was a vital castle-town in the Kingdom of Lazica. Today, the territory features an archaeological museum-reserve displaying unique historical artifacts discovered on-site.
Lunch: Enjoy a traditional lunch in the center of Kutaisi after visiting Bagrati Cathedral.
Dinner: After exploring the nature and history, dinner will be arranged at an authentic Georgian restaurant in Kutaisi, Tskaltubo, or Khoni.
Supper: A final light supper will be held upon returning to Kobuleti or Batumi.
