Our specialized speleological tours in Georgia are organized by our team with exceptional dedication, ensuring that our guests experience the majestic underground beauty of the Caucasus. Georgia is a land of dramatic geological contrasts, where ancient karst systems have created some of the most impressive cave formations in Europe. These curated itineraries provide a comprehensive opportunity to witness these natural wonders firsthand, integrating perfectly with our specialized Nature & Eco-Tours tags and our core Canyons, Caves & Landscapes activity programs.
Overview of Our Speleological Expeditions
Whether you are starting your journey from the capital or the Black Sea coast, our routes are designed to blend adventure with scientific and historical discovery. We offer expeditions departing from both Tbilisi and Batumi, covering the most significant karst massifs in the country. While participating in a speleological tour in Georgia, travelers also have the chance to encounter:
Pristine Nature: Ancient forests, alpine peaks, and dramatic canyons like Okatse and Martvili.
Geological Diversity: Exploration of metamorphic, volcanic, and organogenic rock layers.
Historical Legacy: Sites ranging from the Paleolithic era to medieval masterpieces.
Authenticity: Immersion in traditional architecture, folklore, and the world-renowned 8,000-year-old winemaking process.
Strategic Destinations: From Tskaltubo to Kutaisi
Our speleological expeditions primarily focus on the Imereti region, the undisputed heart of Georgian caving. Key highlights of our itineraries include:
Prometheus Cave (Kumistavi): A world-class destination located near Tskaltubo, featuring six vast chambers, illuminated stalactites, and a mystical underground river.
Sataplia Nature Reserve: Located just outside Kutaisi, this protected area is famous for its preserved dinosaur footprints, karst cave, and unique microclimate.
Uplistsikhe: An ancient rock-hewn city visited along the route, demonstrating the human adaptation of geological formations.
Western Heritage: Every tour is enriched with visits to the cultural landmarks of the western lowlands and the historic towers of the highlands.
Logistics and Participation Guidelines
To ensure the highest quality of service, all our caving fieldwork follows a structured professional framework:
Group Composition & Departure: We conduct both individual and group expeditions. For group tours, a minimum of 4 to 6 members is recommended. All journeys conveniently start and end in the same city, with departures available from Tbilisi and Batumi.
Culinary Experience: We provide 3 to 4 meals per day, featuring organic regional cuisine. Breakfast is scheduled according to the season (7:00–9:30 AM) to maximize daylight for exploration, while lunches are enjoyed at authentic local cafes or as high-quality field packages during travel.
Transportation & Expert Guidance: We utilize specially selected transport, ranging from modern minivans to larger buses, depending on the terrain. Every group is accompanied by a professional translator (English, German, or French), ensuring deep communication.
Connectivity: Despite the remote nature of some karst regions, mobile connectivity (MagtiCom, Silknet/Geocell, Cellfie) remains stable across most routes.
