Ikalto Monastery

The Ikalto Academy Kakheti is famous as one of the most important centers of enlightenment in medieval Georgia. It was here, at the monastery founded in the 6th century, that the Great Academy was established in the 12th century under King David the Builder. Legend says the great poet Shota Rustaveli studied here. Visitors to Ikalto Academy Kakheti can explore the ruins of the educational halls and the ancient marani (wine cellar), which reflects the historical importance of both science and winemaking in the region.
