Step into a world of medieval battles, royal defense, and architectural brilliance with our specialized tour. The historic castles of Georgia are not just stone structures; they are the silent guardians of a nation that stood at the crossroads of empires for millennia. This expedition takes you from the soaring towers of Narikala in Tbilisi to the remote, mystical ruins of Abuli in Javakheti.
Your exploration of the historic castles of Georgia begins in the capital. Narikala Fortress, overlooking Old Tbilisi, has been the city’s main citadel since the 4th century. Its walls have witnessed Persian, Arab, and Mongol invasions, yet it remains the crown of the capital. From Tbilisi, we travel to Dmanisi, an archaeological site of global importance. Here, medieval ruins sit atop prehistoric layers where the oldest Europeans were discovered. The tour continues to Mtskheta, where the strategic positioning of the city’s defense systems showcases how early Georgians protected their spiritual center.
Eastern Georgia is home to some of the most impressive historic castles of Georgia.
Batonis Tsikhe: In Telavi, we visit the royal palace of King Erekle II. This fortified residence is a masterpiece of late medieval Persian-Georgian architecture.
Ujarma & Chailuri: Before reaching the city, we explore the ruins of Ujarma, a crucial 5th-century stronghold, and Chailuri, a fortress that once guarded the gateway to the Kakheti region. These sites reveal the military engineering used to secure the kingdom’s borders.
The central part of our tour brings us to the Shida Kartli region.
Uplistsikhe Cave City: While often called a cave town, it functioned as a powerful rock-hewn fortress from the 6th century BC. Its strategic location above the Mtkvari River made it an impenetrable stronghold.
Amilakhvari Castle: In Kaspi, we visit the residence of the powerful Amilakhvari noble family. This complex features unique defensive towers and a family church, offering a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Georgian aristocracy.
Meskheti is perhaps the most fortified region in the Caucasus. Here, the historic castles of Georgia take on a grander, more rugged appearance.
Rabati Fortress: This recently restored multicultural citadel in Akhaltsikhe showcases a unique blend of Georgian, Ottoman, and European styles. It is the jewel of the region’s defense systems.
Atskuri & Khertvisi: We explore the towering ruins of Atskuri, which guarded the Borjomi Gorge, and Khertvisi, one of the oldest fortresses in the country, mentioned by chroniclers since the time of Alexander the Great.
Abuli and Slesa: For those seeking the mysterious, the cyclopean fortress of Abuli and the ruins of Slesa offer a look at the ancient stone masonry that predates the Middle Ages.
The historic castles of Georgia also guarded the Black Sea coast.
Gonio-Apsaros: This Roman-era fortress near Batumi features massive walls and was once a key military outpost for the Roman and Byzantine empires.
Petra Fortress: Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, Petra was a strategic hub during the Lazic War, controlling the trade routes between the coast and the hinterland.
Our journey concludes with two contrasting sites. Nokalakevi (Archeopolis) in the Senaki region was the capital of the ancient Colchis kingdom, featuring triple walls and secret tunnels. Finally, we visit the fortified monastery complexes of David Gareja, where caves were transformed into spiritual fortresses amidst the semi-desert landscape.
